Fresh Of The Boat Renewed For Season Six By ABC & Constance Wu Doesn’t Seem Pleased

ABC has handed a season six renewal to Fresh Off the Boat, The ground-breaking comedy, which is the first network sitcom fronted by an Asian-American family and actors since Margaret Cho’s All American Girl back in 1994, is said to be too strong to give up by ABC Chief Karey Burke.

Before we get into the number’s game about Fresh Off the Boat, we must address co-star Constance Wu’s reaction to the show being picked up for a sixth season. You would think it would be a time of celebration but Wu apparently had a passion project she really wanted to do and the renewal put a snag in those plans. Here is a series of her tweets:

Leaving no doubt on her true feelings, a fan’s congratulations on the “great news” was slapped down by Wu with a sullen reply: “No, it’s not.” Wu reportedly topped off her tantrum by posting a “dislike” on the show’s official Instagram announcement. The comment has since been erased.

I’m guessing Wu’s people started blowing up her phone and let her know that almost everyone on social media was dragging her for coming off pretty ungrateful, Wu backpedaled hard on her tweets and tried to explain herself:

After these tweets came out, Wu’s people probably told her that’s not good enough so she came with something a bit more sincere…and lengthy:

A lot of fans want ABC to recast Wu but ABC Chief Karey Burke says there are no plans to. Burke was aware that Wu had another project lined up but she says there was no doubt that the show was going to be renewed.

On Fresh Off the Boat, Constance Wu and Randall Park portray the parents of rap-loving high schooler Eddie (Hudson Yang) and his younger sibs Emery (Forrest Wheeler) and Evan (Ian Chen). Lucille Soong plays the wheelchair-bound grandma who always knows more than she lets on.

The April 12th Season 5 finale of Fresh Off the Boat — which was its 101st episode — drew 3.11 million viewers and scored a  0.6/3 in the 18-49 demographic, even with its previous week’s airing. UpTV and Freeform licensed cable syndication rights to the sitcom last summer, two months before the show was eligible for syndication.
