Freddie Highmore Set To Co-Write Homesick, In Development At TBS

Freddie Highmore is expanding his behind the scenes creativity. The actor, who wrote and directed an episode of his hit show The Good Doctor last season, has co-written a dark comedy called Homesick, which has been put in development at TBS.

Highmore, who also serves as an executive producer, co-wrote the project with British writer James Mitchell and it’s based on Mitchell’s personal experiences. The series explores themes of mental health, body image, toxic masculinity, and what it means to defy “normal” expectations of gender. The show will chronicle the dysfunctional relationship between a self-destructive twenty-something, secretly suffering from an eating disorder, and his mother, a raging narcissist and total enabler who also happens to be his best friend in the world.

Highmore has a studio based banner called Alfresco Pictures and this marks the second sale for Highmore and his company under the two-year overall production deal the actor signed with The Good Doctor producer Sony TV last year. During this past broadcast development season, Alfresco had hourlong drama, Love, Dad in development at ABC.

While known primarily for his acting, Highmore has been expanding his horizons as a writer, director, and producer for a while now. He made his writing and directing debut on his previous series, Bates Motel and he wrote the second season premiere of The Good Doctor, along with directing an episode last season. He will take on directing duties again during the upcoming third season.
