Paramount+, currently still going CBS All Access, is about to step into a bit of nostalgia for one of their potential projects. It has been announced that the streamer has a television reboot of Flashdance in the works at the streamer.
Original producer Lynda Obst is returning to oversee the new take on the 1983 film that made Jennifer Beals a star. Tracy McMillan will write the script for the drama, which is currently in development, and Angela Robinson will executive produce and direct the pilot for the potential series. The reboot comes from Paramount Television Studios, where Robinson is under an overall deal.
Paramount Pictures originally distributed the film, which starred Beals as a steel mill worker and young dancer with dreams of becoming a professional ballerina. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, the film opened to extremely negative reviews but became a bit with moviegoers, grossing more than $200 million globally and becoming the third-highest earner in the U.S. in 1983. The film’s soundtrack certainly didn’t hurt matters and with a little help from Irene Cara and a little “She’s A Maniac”, the soundtrack also became a top seller.
The reboot will revolve around a young Black woman with ballet dreams and a strip club reality who struggles to find her place in the world while navigating romance, money, art, friendship and how to love herself. The project becomes the latest in-house IP to be rebooted for ViacomCBS’ streaming platform. Paramount TV, overseen by Nicole Clemens, is also behind the Grease prequel, which recently moved from WarnerMedia-backed HBO Max to Paramount+. The platform is also home to the new Twilight Zone, the Star Trek franchise, a revival of Mara Brock Akil’s The Game, and a behind-the-scenes scripted take on The Godfather, among others.
