Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw Enters Box Office Tracking With Potential $60 Million Opening

Dwayne Johnson may have another hit on his hands with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw according to initial box office tracking.

The Fast & Furious spinoff entered box office tracking this morning with an opening as high as $60 million (the low end, at the moment, is $55 million). That may seem low considering the brand but it is the first spinoff from the multi-billion dollar franchise so this is essentially the test run that could pave the way for more spinoffs like the proposed all-female spinoff.

Hobbs & Shaw carries a $200 million+ budget but much like the Fast & Furious films before it, this is an international performer and it’s also opening in 64 foreign markets on its opening weekend on August 2 with its China opening coming August 23. No one was really expecting it to debut domestically in the range of the last Fast films which have hit $97 million+ in recent outings.

There are signs that the film will exceed its tracking although many are optimistic about box office tracking this summer because it has been very off, to say the least. It’s encouraging that since the launch of the marketing campaign, audience interest continues to grow in key tracking measures. Evidence of this is that the second trailer’s view count grew from the first with the former totaling 284 million global views while the second hit 391 million views, a feat rarely seen on second trailers.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, co-starring Jason Statham, Idris Elba, and Vanessa Kirby opens on August 2.
