Crazy Rich Asians Remains Number One With Crazy Great Hold

Crazy Rich Asians was expected to take the number one spot again this weekend but I don’t think anyone predicted how well the film would hold in week 2.

Crazy Rich Asians grossed an estimated $25 million which represents slim 5.7% dip from last weekend.  The second-weekend drop is one of the smallest of all-time and it brings its domestic total to $76.8 million. Last week I said the film was looking at a $100-110 million finish but with this hold, the film is likely to finish much higher. The holiday weekend approaching will also see the film having a great hold as well so it’s going to be very interesting to watch where the film ultimately lands. This is the power of good reviews, word of mouth and solid representation that was clearly needed at the box office.

Maintaining the number 2 spot is The Meg with an estimated $13 million. The film dropped 38.4% which is a good hold for a film in its third weekend. The film has now grossed $105.3 million at the domestic box office and is still killing it overseas as its worldwide total has now hit $408.6 million.

Debuting in third is The Happytime Murders with an estimated $10 million. There were signs this one would underperform, especially after the reviews came out and it took a beating from most critics. This represents the lowest opening for Melissa McCarthy in a leading role and audiences didn’t seem to like this one either as it received a lackluster “C-” CinemaScore. I see this one disappearing fairly quickly from public view.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout continues to impress in fourth place with an estimated $8 million. The film dropped 25.7% which represents its best hold and gives it another weekend where the drop was less than 50%. I think once the dust settles, Fallout might be declared the most impressive movie of the summer. It’s not the highest grossing film of the season but it has held up remarkably well. The film has now grossed $193.9 million domestically and it still has a shot of becoming the top film of the franchise if it tops the $215 million grossed by Mission: Impossible II. Worldwide the film has grossed an impressive $538 million and it still has an opening in China on the way.

Rounding out the top five is Christopher Robin with an estimated $6.3 million. The film dropped 28.5% and also saw its best hold since opening 4 weeks ago. The film brings its domestic total to $77.6 million, which pushes it over its production budget. Disney was probably expecting a bit more from the film but it’s holding up decently and has grossed $112.7 million worldwide.
