We’ll have to wait three years to get fast and furious again. Universal Pictures is moving the ninth chapter of Fast & Furious to Easter weekend 2020, specifically Good Friday, April 10. The last two movies in the multi-billion franchise, Furious 7 and Fate of the Furious, rank respectively as the second and third biggest openings for Easter weekend with $147.1 million and $98.8 million behind Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s $166 million.
Previous release date for Fast & Furious 9 was April 19, 2019, also an Easter weekend. No director is set on the ninth installment yet, but the core cast of Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez are expected to return.
Currently, Fast & Furious 9 is the only major studio wide release scheduled to open on Easter weekend 2020 as Universal’s sequel Trolls 2 moves forward to Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2020. On that date currently, Warner Bros. has a slot for an untitled DC movie while 20th Century Fox’s Blue Sky Studios’ animated pic Nimona is already there as well.
Now here is where this story gets interesting. Tyrese Gibson, who stars in the highly successful franchise, took to his instagram to comment on the date change and take a jab at his co-star from the films, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It’s no secret that the studio is very interested in spinning off Johnson’s character into his own film and it’s something that Gibson has taken issue with. Here is his first statement about this a month or so ago:
“If you move forward with that #Hobbs Movie you will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter. I don’t wanna hear from you until you remember what we talked about. I’m on your timeline cause you’re not responding to my texts messages. #FastFamily is just that a family……We don’t fly solo.”
He then added:
“I want you to shoot it just not right now cause the #Fast9 release date has already been announced and we can’t let our loyal fans #FastFamily or our loyal fast and furious FANS down on any level from pushing the date.”
Now we come to news of the date change which was announced yesterday and Tyrese got more candid and doesn’t plan on sugarcoating his honesty
“#PSA Congratulations to @TheRock and your brother in law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU – And like you, DJ even if they call I will not be deleting this post – Gn folks see you in 2020 April #FastFamily right? Nah….. it’s about #TeamDewayne #3yrs will it be worth the wait? #NoShaw just Hobbs will this be another #BayWatch? Guys guys just relax I’m just a passionate film critic“
More interesting than your typical date change right? The quote can be found on Gibson’s official Instagram page if you want to see it for yourself!
