As it was to be expected, Sony is moving ahead with a sequel to Escape Room after the $9 million horror film went on to gross $119 million worldwide. The studio has set an April 17, 2020 release date for the project.
Adam Robitel will return to direct along with returning writer Bragi F. Schut and producer Neal H. Moritz. The first film, which stars Deborah Ann Woll, Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, and Tyler Labine, opened at number 2 at the January 4-6 weekend box office amidst heavy post-holiday competition with $18.2 million, beating its $10-$14 million tracking estimates. Escape Room currently has grossed $56.1 million at the domestic box office and $62.5 million abroad, with several territories left to open.
Escape Room followed six strangers who find themselves in a maze of deadly rooms and must use their wits to find the clues or die. Plot details for the sequel are currently being kept under wraps.
