Doctor Strange Stays Number One, Arrival Impresses In Third

Doctor Strange continued to enchant moviegoers with a week two number one finish.  The film grossed an estimated $43 million which was a drop of  49% in week two. This might seem slightly hefty but this is actually the best second weekend hold of the last ten films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film has a gross of $153 million so far and added another $60.2 million to its overseas total which now stands at $339.6 million.

Maintaining its second place position is Trolls with $35 million. The film dropped a mere 24.8% in week two which is a fantastic hold for the film. It clearly is winning over family audiences and should continue to dominate that market in the weeks to come. The film has a gross of $94 million so far and has a lot of fight left in it.

Placing third is our first new release of the weekend, Arrival, with $24 million. This is a solid start for the film which has received glowing reviews from critics (96% on Rotten Tomatoes). I’m a little concerned that people may have expected a far less cerebral film than what we received (it’s excellent by the way) since it did score a “B” opening day CinemaScore but I think word of mouth will carry this one far. It has a budget of $47 million and is having a gradual opening overseas so this will be one to watch in the weeks ahead.
