Among the many events that have occurred this year, there has not been an event as impactful as the controversial U.S. presidential election. That controversy has now entered the Star Wars universe.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a film that has embraced diversity. Recently, its screenwriter has taken to social media to criticize U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump using imagery from the popular franchise.
Disney executives have made it a point to let their audiences know that Rogue One is not an overtly political film, at least as far as real-world, modern-day politics are concerned. Disney CEO Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s premiere,
“I think the whole story has been overblown and, quite frankly, it’s silly. I have no reaction to [this] story at all. Frankly, this is a film that the world should enjoy. It is not a film that is, in any way, a political film. There are no political statements in it, at all.”
