Designated Survivor Canceled…Again…At Netflix

It looks like this President’s term is finally over. After being picked up by Netflix after ABC canceled it, Designated Survivor will not be getting another season on the streamer.

One has to wonder why Netflix even rescued it all if it was going to be one and done for them. The streaming service gave it a home for its third season after ABC decided to not renew the series. The pickup wasn’t an easy one for Netflix and it only happened after months of deal-making. At the time, the streaming service and studio eOne made one-year deals with the cast for the third season only and I guess the writing was on the wall because some of the actors had already moved on to other projects. Here is what Netflix had to say about the series ending on their service:

“We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come. We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman. We’re also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Baer for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season.”

Designated Survivor starred Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, a low-level Cabinet member who is catapulted to the position of President of the United States without preparation after a devastating terrorist attack strikes during the State of the Union, killing all those ahead of him in the presidential succession line. The show was a breakout hit during its first season on ABC but the show saw multiple showrunners come and go, causing its creative direction to shift which caused ratings to slip.
