Deadpool 2 Scores Second Largest R-Rated Opening Of All-Time

Deadpool 2 easily led the box office this weekend but many will speculate how good the debut actually is. The film grossed $125.5 million over the weekend & scored the second biggest R-rated opening of all-time behind the original Deadpool ($132.4 million). The film seemed like it was going to break the record after a record $18.6 million in Thursday previews & a Friday record of $53.3 million for an R-rated film. The movie leveled off a bit the rest of the weekend & couldn’t quite get over the opening weekend record for an R-rated film. The sequel scored an “A” CinemaScore so word of mouth is good but I think there was a rush factor here & I don’t think the sequel converted new fans. This isn’t a bad opening but I think it could’ve opened a tad better. The film did score internationally with a gross of $176.3 million, a record overseas for Fox International.

Dropping to second is Avengers: Infinity War with $29.4 million. Considering the Deadpool 2 competition, this is a solid hold & it brings its domestic gross to over $595 million. Overseas the film is still a beast, grossing $84.4 million over the weekend which brings its overseas total to $1.2 billion. Its global gross now stands at $1.8 billion. The Marvel sequel is now the biggest worldwide summer release of all-time and could likely gross $2 billion, a first for a summer release.

Debuting in third is Book Club with $13.5 million. I thought this was going to open higher but this is still very solid. The film cost only $10 million to make & with a solid “A-” CinemaScore the film is likely to have a solid hold over Memorial Day weekend. The audience skewed 80% female and was a huge hit with older audiences. There isn’t always a rush factor for older moviegoers and this is the kind of film that will make its money gradually.

Falling hard to fourth is Life of the Party with $7.6 million. That’s a drop of 57% for the film which is steep for Melissa McCarthy. The film has grossed $31 million to date.

Rounding out the top five is Breaking In with $6.8 million. The film dropped a heavy 61.3% but the film cost only $6 million to make and has already grossed 4.75x its budget.
