Yesterday during an interview on “Sunrise,” an Australian morning news show, Tom Cruise confirmed that there will be a sequel to his 1986 hit Top Gun. “It’s true,” Cruise repeated to the host. “I’m going to start probably in the next year. I know, it’s happening. It’s definitely happening. You’re the first people I’ve said it to, you asked me and so I’m telling you.”
He did not confirm any further details but the sequel has been a long term goal for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Cruise, who starred in the original as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and shot to fame soon after.
Top Gun was the highest-grossing film of 1986 along with a chart-topping hit music single, “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin. The song went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as a Golden Globe that year. The film was directed by the late Tony Scott and featured an array of stars including Cruise, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan.
