Disney is making some release date moves for two of its films. Cruella is on the move and The Woman in the Window, which they acquired from 20th Century Fox during the Disney-Fox merger, will also be pushed on the calendar.
Cruella, a live-action spinoff of 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil, moves from December 23, 2020, to Memorial Day weekend, May 28, 2021. The film, starring Emma Stone in the titular role, is shifting so it doesn’t compete with another film which the acquired from 20th Century Fox. Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story is set to open over Christmas 2020 and they didn’t want the two films to compete with each other. Memorial Day weekend should be a lucrative launch for the Disney adaptation.
The Woman in the Window, based on the A.J. Finn novel of the same name, is moving from its October 4 release date of this year to May 15, 2020. The reason for the move is that it has to undergo routine reshoots but its star, Amy Adams, wasn’t available for them until this month so they needed more time to get the film just right. The Joe Wright directed film follows an agoraphobic woman living alone in New York who begins spying on her new neighbors, only to witness a disturbing act of violence. The movie also stars Julianne Moore and Gary Oldman.
