Ralph Breaks The Internet Scores With $18.5 Million On Wednesday While Creed II Strong With $11.6 Million

Ralph Breaks the Internet & Creed II both opened wide Wednesday after a nice start in Tuesday night previews and it looks like the Thanksgiving holiday is going to be very good to both films.

Ralph Breaks the Internet grossed $18.5 million on its opening Wednesday and with that start, it’s looking at a potential opening of $95 million over five days. This opening figure would put it well ahead of box office tracking and allows Disney to score another Thanksgiving holiday win. Ralph‘s Wednesday bests the opening days of Moana ($15.5 million, $82 million 5-day) and Coco ($13.1 million, $79.2 million) during Thanksgiving and he’s poised to beat the previous Thanksgiving 5-day record opener Frozen ($93.6 million) in addition to those movies. In terms of pure record gross over 5-days for the holiday, that belongs to Lionsgate’s Hunger Games: Catching Fire which made $109.9M during its ‘second weekend’ (the Wednesday-Sunday Thanksgiving span following its prior opening weekend). With an “A-” CinemaScore, Ralph Breaks the Internet could have some solid legs moving forward.

Creed II is also putting up solid numbers with an opening Wednesday gross of $11.6 million. This opening total will also see Creed II potentially surpassing its tracking with a five day opening of at least $61 million. The film’s opening easily makes it the best live-action opener over Thanksgiving,  beating the $46 million Wednesday-Sunday take of New Line’s Reese Witherspoon-Vince Vaughn comedy Four Christmases. Audiences also loved Creed II, granted it an “A” CinemaScore which also bodes well for its future prospects.

Robin Hood, one of the other new wide releases, wasn’t as strong with an opening Wednesday gross of $3.1 million. This start has it on track to match its box office tracking of $15-17 million over five days. The good news is the decent “B” CinemaScore which means audiences have enjoyed it a bit more than critics who have torn the film apart.

Green Book finds itself further down the list at number nine with an opening Wednesday gross of $908,000. The opening has it on track to also basically match its box office tracking of $6.2 million over five days. When Green Book opened in limited release last week, the film earned an “A+” CinemaScore and Universal is hoping that it can leg out until Golden Globe nominations are announced and hopefully into Christmas.
