Boo! A Madea Halloween Scares Up Number One Opening

A three year absence from theaters paid off for Tyler Perry and Madea over the weekend. Boo! A Madea Halloween takes the top spot at the box office with $27.6 million. The film is budgeted at $20 million so it’s off to a great start for profitability. Perry’s movies tend to have steep week two drops but with Halloween falling a week from today, the film should hold up decently with the holiday weekend to boost it a bit.

Settling for second place is Jack Reacher: Never Go Back with an estimated $23 million. The sequel actually tops the opening of the first film which came in at $15.2 million. That film came out during the holiday season of 2012 and finished with $80 million due to decent reviews and solid word of mouth. It also killed it internationally with about $138 million overseas. The  sequel comes in with less than stellar reviews (40% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes versus the 62% fresh rating of the original) but with a $60 million budget (same as the first film) and a solid opening overseas ($31 million in several markets) the sequel will be another success for Tom Cruise.

Finishing in third is Ouija: Origin of Evil with $14 million. Some forget this but the original film, released on this weekend two years ago, actually opened at number one with $19.9 million and topped out at $50 million. The film cost $5 million to make so despite horrible reviews (7% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes) the film was a success relative to its small budget. Despite the lower opening, Ouija: Origin of Evil is off to a solid start given the fact that it cost only $9 million and has the best reviews of all the openers this weekend (81% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). The film should see a decent hold with Halloween coming up as well.
