Blumhouse Produced Black Christmas Remake Coming This December

Blumhouse is pretty good at keeping secrets because I had no idea this was coming but the horror mega-house is producing a remake of 1974’s Black Christmas and it’s set to be released this December on Friday the 13th.

Sophia Takal (V/H/S) is at the helm of the project and it’s set to star Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O’Grady, and Caleb Eberhardt. This will mark the second remake of the film after the 2006 version released by Dimension films that was panned by audiences and critics alike. It lacked the suspense of the original although it has earned a reputation as a film that is so bad that it’s good.

The original Black Christmas has become a cult classic over the years and is frequently regarded, along with John Carpenter’s Halloween, as one of the best slasher films of its time because of its focus on taunt atmosphere and tension over gore. It also effectively used the killer POV shot that has become a bit of a staple of the genre. The cast included Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, and Andrea Martin.

Black Christmas centers on a group of sorority sisters who begin receiving obscene phone calls as they prepare for the holidays. The calls are coming from a deranged killer who is much closer than they think.

I’m not sure how Blumhouse will approach this take but after what they did with Halloween, I have faith that their adaptation will be more faithful to the level of suspense that was achieved by the first film rather than the cheesy gorefest that the 2006 remake happened to be.

Black Christmas is set to be released on December 13, 2019. Check out the official poster below:
