Black Panther Remains Box Office King, Tops $1 Billion Worldwide

A little wrinkle in time wasn’t enough to dethrone Black Panther from the box office top spot. The Marvel film spent a fourth week at number one and crossed a major milestone worldwide.

Black Panther grossed an estimated $41.1 million over the weekend and actually retained the top spot by a healthy margin. The film brought its domestic total to $562 million and it is now the second highest grossing superhero film of all time pm the domestic front.

Internationally, Black Panther debuted in its final major market this weekend, China, where it opened with an estimated $66.5 million. Overall, the film’s international weekend added an estimated $100 million, pushing the overseas total to $516.6 million for a global tally that now totals $1.078 billion.

Debuting a tad below expectations in second is A Wrinkle In Time with an estimated $33.3 million. The film came in on the low end of tracking & while this isn’t  a bad start, I think Disney expected a bit more from the opening. The film received a “B” CinemaScore so word of mouth could go either way. It is one of the only offerings for young kids out there so it could be ok in the end but I think mixed reviews affected the opening weekend a bit.

Debuting in third is The Strangers: Prey At Night which grossed an estimated $10.2 million. This is about where most tracking had the film debuting but with a mediocre “C” CinemaScore, look at this one to fall off a cliff in week 2.

Falling to fourth is Red Sparrow with an estimated $8.15 million. The film dropped  51.6% which is pretty steep for a Jennifer Lawrence film. The domestic total now stands at $31.1 million & it’s not going to come close to matching its $69 million budget in the states.

Faring much better in fifth is Game Night with an estimated $7.9 million. That’s only a drop of 24% in week three which means word of mouth is pretty solid. The domestic total now stands at $45 million and is now on its way to becoming a modest hit.
