Birds of Prey and The Gentlemen Receive Early VOD Release Dates

Warner Bros. and STX are following the lead of Universal and will be releasing select titles to home entertainment early.

Warner Bros. is set to release Birds of Prey and Just Mercy, while STX’s The Gentlemen will be available for purchase on March 24, a few weeks earlier than the normal VOD release. To compare to other VOD releases, films tend to become available to buy digitally about 74 days after they first arrive in theaters, followed by digital rental and DVD/Blu-ray release two weeks later, at 88 days.

The decision to release  Birds of Prey comes after Cathy Yan’s tweet about a decision by NBCUniversal to release its current slate of films on demand at the same time those films arrive in theaters, “I would not be opposed to putting Birds of Prey on VOD earlier.”

It looks as though we can expect more studios to follow suit as theaters have closed for the next 6-12 weeks.
