CBS is sticking with its popular reality series, Big Brother. It has been announced that the show has been renewed for a 23rd season by the network.
Big Brother will return to its signature summer slot in 2021 and Julie Chen Moonves will continue her hosting duties. The news of the pickup came hours ahead of the show’s season 22 finale which aired last night. Mitch Graham, senior VP alternative programming at CBS, had this to say about the renewal:
“At Big Brother, we always expect the unexpected, but 2020 gave us our biggest challenge to date. We could not be prouder of the entire team who delievered a fantastic season under such extreme circumstances. It feels fitting for this unprecedented season to conclude with an announcement of the show’s return next summer”
The big challenge this season was the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced production on the current all-star season to be delayed by about two months. The new season premiered in early August, and its multiple weekly airings have helped CBS fill in its schedule that is a bit bare due to the pandemic. The reality program has also posted solid numbers throughout this season, with Wednesday and Thursday editions basically matching their year-ago performance. Big Brother has also seen a spike in social interactions, improving by 75% over last season.
