It looks like nostalgia can only get you so far because it’s one and done for the meta reboot, BH90210. Fox has canceled the series after only one season.
The reboot was billed as a 6-episode event series but had it been successful, the network would’ve gladly renewed it for another season. All signs pointed to the show being a hit when the trailer garnered huge viewership back in May & when the premiere drew strong demo numbers for a summer series. Once the nostalgia wore off however, each subsequent episode saw declines which ultimately sealed its fate. Not helping matters was some of the behind the scenes drama & the series going through multiple showrunners in a pretty short time span.
BH90210 was described as a serialized drama – with a dose of irreverence — inspired by the real lives and relationships of Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, the septet, who played heightened versions of themselves, reunited when one of them suggested it was time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. I personally thought the idea was funny & I got the humor but it was clear that hardcore fans of the old series really didn’t jive with the heightened meta approach based on their reactions to each episode on social media platforms.
The 90210 brand is an important library title for CBS TV Studios so I’m sure they’ll do something with it again in the future but this incarnation is dead & gone.
