A pilot that didn’t make the cut on FOX, is now getting new life at Netflix. The streaming service has picked up the musical drama, Mixtape, for a 10-episode order.
The series stars Jenna Dewan, Callie Hernandez, and Madeline Stowe and comes from Quantico creator Josh Safran. The show is being described as a romantic musical drama that looks at the love stories connecting a diverse, disparate group of people in contemporary Los Angeles through the music that lives inside their hearts and minds.
Mixtape actually was well liked internally over at FOX but the network thought it needed to be retooled a bit and decided not to order the show to series. It was taken out by the studio to streamers immediately after Fox Broadcasting Co. had made its pickup decisions last month and talks progressed at Netflix. The actors were picked up this past weekend just hours before their options were set to expire.
This is the third broadcast pilot to get a series order by Netflix after missing the cut at its original network. Last year, the streaming platform picked up drama Insatiable (originally at the CW) and comedy All About the Washingtons starring Rev Run (originally at ABC). The streamer also revived Lucifer for a fourth season after it was canceled by FOX and it’s being reported that they are still in talks to possibly bring back Designated Survivor which was canceled by ABC.
