Ben Affleck Opens Up About His The Batman Exit

The DCEU was not in the best position a few years ago. With the failures of Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League, it was evident that some changes needed to be made. In early 2019, one of those changes look place. In an  interview with The New York Times, Ben Affleck explains his reasons for leaving the The Batman in January of 2019. Affleck leaving the project was huge because at one point he was going to star in and direct. In the piece, Affleck stated,

“I showed somebody the Batman script,” Affleck said. “They said, ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.'”

Director Zack Snyder originally cast Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman in August 2013 for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He played the bat in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and long had plans to write and direct The Batman. However, when Justice League opened and failed at the box office, it was evident that a change may be on the way. In February 2017, Reeves boarded as director, and by July the filmmaker had noted he had dropped Affleck’s original script.
