Aquaman Beating Justice League In First Week With Additional $14.6 Million On Thursday

Aquaman is continuing its box office dominance this week and passed another significant milestone within the recent DC Universe.

Aquaman grossed $14.6 million Thursday and now brings its one week total to $137.2 million (including previews). With at this point of release, it has now surpassed the first week of Justice League which had $130.8 million after seven days. Aquaman will also easily lead the New Year’s Day Weekend box office so Warner Bros. & DC will have continued reasons to celebrate the success of Aquaman.

Mary Poppins Returns maintained its second place position and continued to show that musicals really leg it out over the holiday season with $10.1 million, down only 7% from Wednesday. The film has grossed $70.9 million to date and is 112% ahead of The Greatest Showman in its first nine days but remember The Greatest Showman was a leggy affair last year so Mary Poppins Returns will soon fall behind last year’s musical hit as it won’t likely have similar staying power. Mary Poppins Returns is no slouch and even though it may be performing a bit under expectations, it’s still doing just fine.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swapped spots with Bumblebee and moved up to third place with close to $5.9 million, virtually even with its gross from Wednesday. The film has grossed $85.5 million to date and these great holds almost guarantee that it will be at $100 million by Sunday.

Falling to fourth is Bumblebee with $5.7 million as it brings its domestic total to $46.2 million after its first week, including previews. Bumblebee is expected to virtually match its gross from last weekend as it’s still doing solid box office due to positive word of mouth.
