Ant-Man And The Wasp Buzzes To Number One At The Box Office

Marvel Studios & Ant-Man And The Wasp easily topped the weekend box office while the long holiday weekend was kind to most of the movies in play at the box office.

The Marvel sequel grossed $76 million over the weekend which represents nearly a $20 million improvement over the opening of the first film. An interesting fact is that the Friday gross was significant in that it represented 44.5% of the weekend take. That’s the largest of the MCU and suggests the film was a bit frontloaded but we’re dealing with a long weekend here with the Fourth of July falling on a Wednesday so moviegoers were doing many different things this weekend. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore which indicates strong word of mouth so the film should play well in the coming weeks. The film grossed $85 million overseas which gives the film an impressive start of $161 million worldwide.

Dropping to second is Incredibles 2 which grossed $29 million. The film has grossed $504.3 million to date and it is now the highest grossing animated film of all-time at the domestic box office.

Falling to third is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which grossed $28.5 million. The domestic take is at $333.3 million but before we start talking diminishing returns in comparison to its predecessor, let’s remember the film has grossed $1.058 billion worldwide. No one at Universal is complaining about that.

Debuting in fourth is The First Purge with $17.1 million. The film has grossed $31 million since opening on the Fourth of July & has already passed its $13 million budget. The film received a “B-” CinemaScore which is good for horror but even if the film takes a big dive next weekend, it’s already a hit.

Rounding out the top five is Sicario: Day of the Soldado which grossed $7.3 million. That’s a hefty drop of 61.6% as it has now grossed $35.3 million. It should still match the $45 million gross of the original but that drop feels a tad too heavy.
