AFI Announces Top Ten Picks For Film & TV

The American Fan Institute announced their 10 movie and TV shows for their AFI Awards and a lot of familiar titles made their cut.

AFI choose a broad spectrum in the film category from big studio films (Black Panther, A Star is Born) to indie favorites (Eighth Grade, First Reformed). Judging by how award season has gone so far, it looks like the Oscar race may make the casual moviegoer and movie aficionados equally happy. Roma also made their cut but with a special award that recognizes excellence outside the institute’s criteria for American film.

The TV side of things offered up the usual suspects but This Is Us once again proved to be the lone network series to make their cut as AFI mostly went with cable and streaming series’ for their picks. Speaking of streaming, of the Big 3 streaming services, Hulu was completely shut out of the bunch.

The awards are based on jury voting by AFI Trustees, scholars, artists and critics. The winners will be honored January 4 at the annual luncheon in Los Angeles. Check out the top ten choices for film and TV below:
