Leah Remini will get to continue her fight to expose the dark side of Scientology. A&E has renewed Leah Remini: Scientology And The Aftermath for a third season.
Launched by the King of Queens and Kevin Can Wait actress in 2016, Scientology and the Aftermath serves as an in-depth exploration of the controversial organization’s reportedly abusive practices and policies. Former parishioners — including former high-ranking Scientology official Mike Rinder, who co-stars alongside Remini — have gone in front of the show’s cameras to detail their harrowing experiences within the church, including alleged coerced abortions and sexual abuse.
The series was part of the start of a recalibration for the network after it dabbled in scripted programming. It’s one true hit was Bates Motel but as that show was wrapping up its fifth season, the network was beginning to fall out of the top ten cable networks. Once it returned to nonfiction programming, the network began showing the first signs of a ratings turnaround with the first back-to-back months of viewership growth in almost four years. The network, which is back in the Top 10, has four current shows that have won top program Emmys — Scientology and the Aftermath, Born This Way, Intervention, and Biography.
Scientology has consistently denied claims made by Remini and the show’s subjects, calling the series “nothing more than a scripted, rehearsed, acted, and dramatized work of fiction.”
