For the second weekend in a row, adults are offered a reason to go the movies and they respond with decent results. The Accountant is our number one movie over the weekend with an estimated $24.7 million. This is very similar to the $24.5 million that The Girl on the Train opened to last week but the key difference is audience response. The Girl on the Train had a B- opening night CinemaScore while The Accountant came in with an A-. Both films got mixed notices from critics (43% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes for The Girl on the Train versus 51% for The Accountant) but it looks like the latter film may have better legs due to a better response from moviegoers.
Our other new release, Kevin Hart: What Now?, opened in second with $11.9 million. This makes it the largest weekend opening for a stand-up comedy film. His previous stand-up effort, Let Me Explain, opened to $17.3 million but it opened on a Wednesday night and had a different roll out from this film. The reviews for What Now? are solid (78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and it scored an A- opening CinemaScore. I think it benefited from a lack of comedic offerings and will come out a winner due to its tiny $10 million budget.
