A Quiet Place was anything but at the box office this weekend & in the process, it scored one of the best openings for a horror film ever.
A Quiet Place grossed an estimated $50 million & came in way above expectations. The film carries a $17 million budget and is a much-needed win for Paramount Pictures which has had a rough go of it lately. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore which is good for horror & while it could take a tumble next weekend, it’s going to be a $100M+ earner when it’s all said and done.
Ready Player One had a solid hold in week two, grossing $25 million for the weekend. That’s only a 40% drop which indicates word of mouth is doing its job. The film has grossed just shy of $97 million and has cleared $391.3 million worldwide.
Blockers debuts in third with an impressive $21.4 million. This is a good start, particularly for an R-rated comedy. It topped the $17 million opening for Game Night, which became a word of mouth hit a few weeks ago and the same could be in store here. The film received a “B” CinemaScore.
Falling to fourth is Black Panther with an estimated $8.4 million. The film has grossed over $665 million and has now topped Titanic to become the third highest grossing domestic release of all-time.
Rounding out the top five is I Can Only Imagine with $8.3 million. The film dropped a slim 20% & has grossed just shy of $70 million on a small $7 million budget.
