Disney has officially earned its seventh $1 billion grosser of 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker officially crossed the milestone on Tuesday and also became the ninth film of 2019 to do so (Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and Warner Bros’ Joker hold the other two spots). The fact that Disney has seven of those 2019 releases to cross this feat is just a testament of the strength of Disney’s monopoly at the box office.
Through Tuesday, Skywalker counts $483.1 million domestic and $519.7 million at the international box office for a worldwide take of $1.001 billion to date. Wednesday and Thursday grosses were unavailable as of this writing.
Even though The Rise of Skywalker is lagging a bit behind 2017’s The Last Jedi, the film is still the fourth of the recent Star Wars movies to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It’s likely end point worldwide should be about $1.1 billion. The film caps off a great 2019 for Disney which also saw Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Frozen 2, Captain Marvel, Aladdin and Toy Story 4 all crossing the impressive milestone.
