I’m all about the Keanu Reeves renaissance as much as the next guy but do we really need another Matrix sequel? Apparently, Warner Bros. thinks we do because a fourth film is officially a go with Keanu Reeves returning as well as his co-star from the first three films, Carrie-Anne Moss. Lana Wachowski, the co-creator and director of The Matrix, is also returning.
Wachowski will write, direct and produce the new project. Reeves will, of course, reprise his role as Neo while Moss will be returning as Trinity. Lana Wachowski had this to say about returning to the franchise:
“Many of the ideas Lily and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
The first film, released in 1999, was groundbreaking and revolutionary for its time. The movie became a surprise box office hit and even scored with critics which of course led to the release two more sequels: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The sequels made their fair share of money but the critical and fan reaction diminished by the time the third film was released.
The new Matrix film is reportedly looking towards a production start date the begins at the top of 2020.
