12 Days Of Box Office Update: Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Earns Second Best Christmas Eve For A Star Wars Movie With $20 Million

Christmas Eve tends to be the slowest day of the 12 Days of Box Office but that didn’t stop Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to put up solid numbers.

The latest Star Wars entry grossed $20 million on Christmas Eve. This makes it the second-best Christmas Eve for a Star Wars film behind Force Awakens ($27.4 million), and ahead of Last Jedi ($17.6 million) and Rogue One ($15.3 million).

Skywalker even had a great hold when compared to its previous holiday released entries,  down 32% yesterday from Monday, which is a better hold than Last Jedi‘s Christmas Eve (- down 40%), Rogue One ( down 33%) and just behind Force Awakens’ hold between December 23 and 24 (down 28%).

This year’s Christmas Eve actually held much better than the year before. Most films dropped an average of 19% compared to the 32% drop from last year. Jumanji: The Next Level dipped a small 7% to $6.78 million and brings its domestic take to $116.4 million to date.

Another film to see a small decline was Knives Out which was down 8% to $1.67 million. The domestic gross for the ensemble whodunit stands at $93.4 million with $100 million possibly in its sights by the end of the weekend. Also expected to hit a milestone on Christmas Day is Frozen 2 which dropped 23% yesterday to $3.4 million, bringing its domestic tally to $395.1 million. $400 million is a certainty by end of Christmas Day.

Bombshell saw a slight drop as well of 5% to 878,000. Older skewing films tend to get discovered more after Christmas so don’t count out Bombshell just yet. The film has a domestic tally of $7.3 million. Another adult-skewing film, Cats, is still D.O.A., dropping 23% to $1.08 million with a gross of $9 million to date.

Little Women and Spies in Disguise didn’t hold previews on Christmas Eve but Adam Sandler’s critically acclaimed film, Uncut Gems, certainly did. The film grossed $1.15 million from 1,628 screens and there are reports that the film was seeing sell-outs from various locations. This certainly bodes well for when the film expands to 2,341 screens today.
