An Ode to Bad Reels: Birdemic 2: The Resurrection

James Nguyen is back on my Ode to Bad Reels list for the second week in a row with the sequel to Birdemic, the even more over the top Birdemic 2: The Resurrection. After watching the first Birdemic and heard there was a sequel, I did not know what to expect from this movie. I did not know whether the movie would try to take itself more seriously than its predecessor or was it going to utilize the momentum of the first film being one of the worst films ever made and just continue the joke. After watching this movie I see they went with the ladder and completely made a joke of the first Birdemec with worst acting and an even more complicated story.

Birdemic 2: The Resurrection begins the same way Birdemic: Shock and Terror began with an elongated travel sequence leading the main character to a restaurant where the waitress delivers the same opening line as the first film. Once the waitress delivers the first hit, all my hopes for this movie being a step forward from the first Birdemic were thrown out the window since you hear the same exact horrible sound quality. Through the conversation, we find out that the main character, Bill, is a movie executive and the waitress just so happens to be a struggling actress so they begin to discuss a movie he is working on. During their conversation we get the return of the two main characters from the first film, Rod and Nathalie, who seem to be perfectly fine after the event that took place during the Birdemic 1, and it just so happens that they know each other and Rod offers to fund Bill’s movie with the money he received from his company being sold.

In the Birdemic 1 article, I mentioned how terrible of a performance the actor playing Rod gave but in this movie, the actor playing Bill manages to pull off something I have never seen in any film.  Throughout the movie, it is visually obvious that the actor is intentionally overacting and being way too over the time just to mess with the director.  What makes this even funnier is that it seems that the director is so bad at making movies that he did not even notice this was happening and left every over-enthusiastic smile, goofy delivery of lines and awkward high fives in the film as if they were great takes.  To add to this humor, Whitney Moore, the actress playing Nathalie, looks like she does not have a care left for this movie with her memorable facial expressions in the background and literally laughing out loud at the antics of the actor playing Bill during the filming of their scenes together.

Birdemic 2

This time around, in a world that does not acknowledge the first Birdemic attack which seemed to be a terrible event with plenty of lives lost and a ton of destruction, the director decided, instead of just using the same bird that just flew away for no reason at the end of the first film, to have “ancient birds be resurrected by red rain and rise from the earth.  To add a cherry on top of this, he also includes zombies and cavemen to be resurrected along with the birds.  I did not think this was going to get this outrageous.  I predicted a carbon copy of the first film with the birds just coming back and dive bombing their way back into the characters lives but I seem to have underestimated James Nguyen.

A couple of notable scenes for this film were when one of the characters were swimming and got attacked by a terrible CGI jellyfish.  I’m still trying to figure out the reason for this scene, why do I just see a random jellyfish attack during a bird attack movie?  The obvious green screen in this scene also adds to the memorable factor of this scene.  The other scene is when they are fighting the birds with guns.  During the gun fight, Rod decides to throw his gun to Bill and proceeds to use martial arts spin kicks to combat the birds.  He used kicks to fight killer birds that are flying above him.
