Getting your ad pulled because it was too crazy is probably the best publicity for a horror film and that’s exactly what happened with an ad for The Nun. The six-second snippet was removed by YouTube for being “inappropriate”.
A ‘jump-scare’ tease for The Conjuring spinoff, which opens on September 7, triggered too many complaints from Twitter users, that YouTube took notice and removed the video. Of course, the ad lives on and was easily found so we can share it with you.

The video features a volume button declining before a Nun pops up and screams. The following ad ran prior to other videos loading up. Warner Bros. provided no comment in response to YouTube removing the video.
I’m not exactly sure why YouTube picked on this ad in particular because, while effective, it doesn’t come close to what most children under 12 come across online. Jump-scare ads are also pretty common in horror, with one of the more notable ones executed by Lionsgate eight years ago for The Last Exorcism on Chatroulette where they showed a young woman, trying to allure guys, who then morphed into a screaming face.
YouTube responded to one Twitter handle whose tweet was retweeted 132K times, saying that the ad violates their “shocking content policy”. Yes…so very shocking.
