Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is going from the aquatic landscape of Aquaman to taking the red pill of The Matrix. It is being reported that Mateen is circling a lead role in the upcoming Matrix sequel opposite Keanu Reeves & Carrie Anne-Moss.
Director Lana Wachowski had been meeting with various actors for a secret lead role in the film and Mateen emerged as a frontrunner to join the project. The meetings began some weeks ago but Abdul-Matten moved to the head of the pack in recent days.
Warner Bros. announced plans for a fourth Matrix film back in August. Although I’m all for the Keanu Reeves Renaissance and I’m fully aware that the first film is a classic of its time, I still don’t feel like anyone was really clamoring daily for another film. That being said, Wachowski did get Reeves and Anne-Moss back in the fold so at least there will be some pedigree, so to speak, attached to the latest installment.
In addition to Aquaman, Abdul-Mateen appeared as Lupita Nyong’o’s character’s father in Jordan Peele’s Us and he will appear as Cal Abar in HBO’s Watchmen TV series.
