Remember that X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer we got last week that said it was coming out February 14, 2019? Well, cross that off your calendars because the release date has been changed yet again. X-Men: Dark Phoenix will now hit screens on June 7, 2019.
The release date change is actually a positive one for the film. Summer is not only a better date, but it also gives the film a better shot to have a bigger opening in China. The trailer clocked 44 million views in the first 24 hours of release online last week out of China. Also, premium screens previously reserved for Gambit will be in play and provide an even bigger upside for the film. Dark Phoenix will be up against Illumination/Uni’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Lionsgate’s comedy Flarsky on that date.
Since X-Men: Dark Phoenix takes the June date, that means Gambit, a movie you probably thought wasn’t happening anymore, is also on the move. The film moves from June 7 to March 13, 2020. The movie is still in development with no director yet and Channing Tatum is still attached. Reid Carolin and Joshua Zetumer were working on the script. Right now it’s the only studio tentpole on that date.
