Last weekend Buffy fans, such as myself, were absolutely shook by the news that a reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer was in the works. Although Joss Whedon is involved as executive producer, fans everywhere were a bit hostile about the prospect of someone touching their beloved series, especially since the seven-season series still holds up today.
Writer Monica Owusu-Breen (Alias, Midnight Texas) who is the main creative force behind the project, has now spoken out after the backlash and she wants to ensure fans that their favorite series can’t be replaced:
“For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy The Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that lov. I watched her fight, and strugge and slay. There is only one Buffy, One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel…They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, twenty years later…And the word seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer. And that’s all I can say.”
The new Buffy is being described as a “contemporary” and “richly diverse” take on the original series, building on the mythology of the original and using aspects of it to comment on aspects of the current political and cultural climates. It was also reported that the reboot will cast a black actress in the title role.
