Wonder Woman 1984 Officially Shifting Its Release Date To Christmas Day

It’s official! After exhibitors speculated that Wonder Woman 1984 would move off its October 2 release date, the news comes that the film is indeed heading to a December release.

Wonder Woman 1984 will now open on December 25, which puts it days after another Warner Bros. release, Dune, which opens on December 18. There was speculation Dune would move to 2021 if Wonder Woman moved to December so they don’t compete but as of now Dune is staying put. Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich had this to say about the move:

“Patty Jenkins is an exceptional filmmaker and with Wonder Woman 1984 she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love. We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays.”

Director Patty Jenkins also shared her thoughts on the film’s new release date:

“First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for WW84 couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie. Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!”

For those keeping track, Wonder Woman 1984 has moved release dates four times. The film was initially heading for a November 2019 release but Warner Bros. moved the film to the lucrative summer date in June. In retrospect, I bet they wished they kept the November 2019 date because a little thing called COVID-19 ruined plans for the June release and the film was then moved to August. Realizing that movie theaters wouldn’t be open at the necessary level needed for the film to earn the money necessary to turn a profit, the movie was then pushed to the October 2 date. Movie theaters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York have yet to reopen and aren’t estimated to do so until maybe late September or early October which is why Wonder Woman 1984 made what one hopes is its final move to Christmas Day.
