Wonder Woman 1984 Continues Steady Decline At The Box Office

Wonder Woman 1984 was easily the number one movie in America for the third week in a row but its steady decline in the States and fading interest overseas means the sequel will surely not match its $200 million budget even with international numbers factored in.

Wonder Woman 1984 grossed $3 million over the weekend, representing a 45% decline at 2,218 theaters and a running total of $32.6 million domestically. Worldwide, Wonder Woman 1984 stands at $131.4 million, and compared to the other Warner Bros. title released during that pandemic, Tenet, it’s down significantly from the global $362.9 million take of the Christopher Nolan film. No one expected Wonder Woman 1984 to do huge numbers as the world is still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and 60% of all movie theaters are shut down. That being said, Warner Bros. has tested these waters twice now and it makes me wonder if they wish they would’ve just waited and released Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 when the box office climate was much healthier. According to “Deadline”, after a dismal holiday period, some movie theaters have decided to close down, and are skipping paying Warner Bros. on WW1984; that’s how bad things are. The studio, which normally doesn’t need to fight for its rental dollars, will need to do so now.

There is also a lack of transparency about how well or not well the film is doing on HBO Max. It has about two weeks left on the platform but WarnerMedia has not really bragged about numbers. They did reveal that they saw some significant subscriber increases in the first weekend of the film’s release but many insiders believe if there was something great to shout out to the world about WW1984‘s success on HBO Max, we would’ve heard about it already. If there is something positive to report, it’s expected to be revealed during the next AT&T earnings call.

If you’re curious about where Wonder Woman 1984 is performing the best, “Deadline” has unveiled the top ten locations for the title: 1. Sacramento Drive-In, 2. Solano Twin Drive-In Greater San Francisco, 3. Paramount Drive-In Los Angeles, 4. Cinemark Carefree Circle Colorado Springs, 5. Capitol Drive-In Greater San Francisco, 6. Glendale Drive-In Phoenix, 7. AMC Disney Springs Orlando, 8. Cinemark North Canton Cleveland, 9. Cinemark Majestic Cinemas Boise, and 10. Cinemark Tinseltown Colorado Springs. And the top ten DMA were 1. Salt Lake City, 2. Dallas, 3. Phoenix, 4. Houston, 5. Greater New York Metro area (NJ, CT, and Upstate NY theaters), 6. Denver, 7. Atlanta, 8. Orlando, 9. Tampa, and 10.
