The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run Skips Theaters and Moves to VOD

In another film release date move that’s become commonplace these days, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon announced that The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run will skip theaters in August and debut on premium video-on-demand in early 2021. The film will coincide with the addition of past seasons of the hit cartoon series on the CBS All Access streaming platform.

The movie was initially set to debut on the big screen on August 7th, but given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, ViacomCBS decided to shift.

“We are thrilled to have The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, a premiere, first-run movie from one of ViacomCBS’ biggest brands, join CBS All Access’ expanding slate of franchise content from across ViacomCBS,” said Marc DeBevoise, CEO of ViacomCBS Digital. “This launch will be perfectly timed with our continued expansion and planned rebranding of the service in early 2021, as we welcome SpongeBob and the gang from Bikini Bottom to the service in the biggest way possible.”

Were you looking forward to watching it in theaters?
