Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have pulled the fifth installment of The Purge franchise, The Forever Purge, from its July release date in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Forever Purge was set to open on July 10 which would’ve made it one of the first new releases to open in theaters after movie chains were shuttered nationwide in response to COVID-19. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is still holding firm on its July 17 date but it’s no longer the first film to test the moviegoing waters this summer. Solstice Studios’ Russell Crowe road rage movie Unhinged released a trailer last week & announced it’s going for a wide release run on July 1.
There is no determination as of yet if whether The Forever Purge goes to PVOD, which is where Universal released Trolls World Tour to a near $100 million in revenue and has the Judd Apatow movie The King of Staten Island scheduled to go on June 12. The Forever Purge seems prime for a PVOD release but the franchise has been a reliable box office performer so they may still consider a theatrical release. The last three Purge films played the month of July with the franchise’s four films grossing more than $456 million worldwide.
