The Baker and the Beauty will not be coming back for seconds. ABC has canceled the romantic comedy-drama, based on the hit Israeli format.
ABC thought that The Baker and the Beauty would be sort of like comfort food counterprogramming during the coronavirus pandemic but the series never caught on with viewers and ranked as one of the ABC’s lowest-rated series. The show, starring Victor Rasuk and Nathalie Kelley in the title roles, centers on Daniel Garcia (Rasuk), who is working in the family bakery and doing everything that his loving Cuban parents and siblings expect him to do. But on a wild Miami night, he meets Noa Hamilton (Kelley), an international superstar and fashion mogul, and his life moves into the spotlight. Will this unlikely couple upend their lives to be together and pull their families into a culture clash.
Across its nine-episode freshman run this spring, The Baker and the Beauty averaged a 0.47 demo rating and 2.5 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day Numbers). Also starring Carlos Gomez, Dan Bucatinsky, Lisa Vidal, Belissa Escobedo, Michelle Veintimilla, and David Del Rio, the series hails from The Brave creator Dean Georgaris, David Frankel, Keshet Studios, Universal TV and ABC Studios.
I hope that seeing ABC’s terrible decision, and the response of 137,000 fans that the network will either reverse their decision or another one will benefit from their mistake. Latinx and LGBTQ representation is so important in 2020.
