Swamp Thing Canceled Less Than A Week After DC Universe Premiere

Well, that didn’t take long. In one of the more tackiest cancellations to date, Swamp Thing has already been dismissed by the DC Universe streaming service from WarnerMedia mere days after its premiere on the service.

The writing was weirdly on the wall even before the series premiered. The quick cancellation comes after DC Universe reduced the show’s order and amid questions about the niche platform’s place in WarnerMedia’s streaming plans. When the story was dropped that the order was reduced, a trailer for the series was released to distract from this fact and they seemed to be supporting the show but it was obvious that they weren’t 100% in on the series.

It’s also being reported that execs are already nervous about subscribers and reach for the DC Universe streaming service and it didn’t help that Swamp Thing was met with pretty negative reviews when it premiered. “Bloody Disgusting” also cites a source that says creative differences between several involved also doomed the series. One side wanted something more in line with the horror genre while the other was pulling for a “weekly procedural” style.

The series centered on CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed). When she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

The series also starred Jennifer Beals, Derek Mears, Virginia Madsen, Ian Ziering, Will Patton, Andy Bean, Kevin Durand, Henderson Wade, Jeryl Prescott, and Maria Sten.
