Summer Box Office Slips 2% in 2019

Despite the fact that summer 2019 had more than one film that grossed over 1 billion dollars, the 2019 summer box office won’t be one for the record books.

The summer blockbuster season which stretches over a four-month stretch between May and August, generated $4.32 billion in ticket sales in North America, marking a 2% decline from last year’s $4.41 billion, according to Comscore.

While this summer doesn’t come in comparison to 2017, where ticket sales hit a 10-year low with $3.84 billion, it is still a disappointment. The 2 percent drop this summer has pushed year-to-date revenues down over 6%, meaning the fall-winter season needs to come in strong to attain a profit for 2019.

To the surprise of no one, Disney walked away the big winner this summer as three movies, “The Lion King,” “Aladdin” and “Toy Story 4”  grossed more than $1 billion worldwide over the summer.
