Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Three-Peats At Number One

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker spent the first box office weekend at number one which brought its reign to three weeks at the top of the heap. The Grudge was the lone new wide release and the film opened to ok numbers despite its rare “F” CinemaScore which should lead to its quick death in the weeks ahead

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker grossed $34.5 million over the weekend. That’s a drop of 52.3% which is a decent hold coming off its holiday run. The film is now13% behind Last Jedi, which had already crossed the half-billion mark in US/Canada by its 17th day of release. Again, the 17th day of release for Last Jedi happened to be New Year’s Eve in its run so The Last Jedi was working with a more lucrative day at the box office by that point of its release. The Rise of Skywalker has now grossed $451.5 million at the domestic box office and the film also added another $50.5 million internationally this weekend for an overseas total that now stands at $468 million. Its global total has now reached $918.8 million as it will soon become Disney’s seventh $1+ billion global release of 2019.

Maintaining second place is Jumanji: The Next Level which grossed $26.2 million. The sequel had a great hold, just off 25.6% from last weekend which indicates that the film could have similar legs to its predecessor, although it is running behind the pace of that film at this point. The Next Level has now grossed $235.9 million at the domestic box office and internationally the film added another $42.4 million this weekend, bringing the overseas total to $374 million for a global tally reaching $610 million.

Little Women continues to shine in third place with $13.6 million, down just 18.8% from last weekend. The film is really hitting with the target demo and if it can pull off some key Oscar nominations next week, I think it will continue to be a player. The film has a domestic total of $60 million and internationally the film added $9.5 million this weekend from six markets, bringing the overseas total to $20.4 million.

Although it was announced earlier that The Grudge landed in fourth place, the final numbers showed that Frozen 2 leaped over the long-haired ghosts to take its place. Frozen 2 grossed $11.8 million, dipping just 29.8%. Keep in mind that Frozen 2 opened a week before Thanksgiving and it’s experiencing a run that is very similar to the first film. Frozen 2 has now grossed $450.4 million at the domestic box office and it added another $42.4 million internationally, which raises its overseas total to $875.3 million for a massive, $1.325 billion worldwide. This makes Frozen 2 the highest-grossing animated release of all time worldwide, topping Frozen ($1.281B) and Incredibles 2 ($1.243B).

Rounding out the top five is the reboot of The Grudge which grossed $11.4 million. Considering the “F” CinemaScore and the visceral reaction the film is getting online, Sony Screen Gems should be happy they got this much out of it on opening weekend. This is the lowest opening for The Grudge films that have been released theatrically. The 2004 Sarah Michelle Gellar version had a spectacular 3-day of $39.1 million while the 2006 sequel opened to $20.8 million. The Grudge will be a distant memory soon and will need international grosses to kick in so Sony doesn’t lose money. The reported budget is $10 million but other sources so it’s actually closer to $14 million. Internationally, The Grudge opened in 29 markets with an estimated $5.8 million.
