Spider-Man: Far From Home Maintains Top Spot At The Box Office

Spider-Man: Far From Home easily topped the box office for the second weekend in a row and also passed a milestone for the franchise.

Far From Home grossed an estimated $45.3 million over the weekend and dropped 51.1%. With a domestic total of $274.5 million to date, it’s ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming at the same point of release which means a final domestic tally of $375-400 million is likely in play.  Internationally, the film added another $100 million to bring its overseas total to $572.5 million which makes it the highest grossing Spider-Man film abroad, besting the $555 million total of Spider-Man 3. The worldwide tally is just shy of $850 million.

Maintaining second place is Toy Story 4 with an estimated $20.6 million. The film dropped 39% this weekend and has definitely seen some good holds since its opening weekend. Toy Story 4 ends up being one of the few winners of the summer and it’s about $10 million ahead of Toy Story 3 at the same point of release so it’s likely to top that film’s $415 million final domestic take. Toy Story 4 has grossed $346.3 million at the domestic box office and internationally the film added $48.1 million for an overseas gross that now totals nearly $425 million and a global tally topping $771 million. Among the weekend’s new markets, the film debuted in Japan with an estimated $15.3 million, setting the highest Disney Animation/Pixar opening of all-time in the market.

Debuting in third is Crawl with an estimated $12 million. The opening isn’t bad but I expected a tad more due to the better than expected reviews (88% on Rotten Tomatoes). The film earned a “B” CinemaScore which is actually solid for a film like this and the opening isn’t too far off from 47 Meters Down which opened to $11.2 million back in 2017. That film legged out to $44 million so Crawl is hoping for the same fate.

Stuber lands in fourth with an estimated $8 million. This is a pretty disappointing debut and continues to drive home the fact that comedy is really struggling at the box office. The film wasn’t expected to really fill the seats but it was tracking in the $11-12 million range so it didn’t even get to those heights. The film earned a “B” CinemaScore which is encouraging but the opening is a bit too low for any positive word of mouth to turn this thing around.

Rounding out the top five is Yesterday with an estimated $6.7 million. The film dropped 32.9% and has another good hold in week 3. The film is benefitting from solid word of mouth and has really connected with older moviegoers. The film has grossed $48.3 million to date and at this current trajectory, it could reach $60-70 million by the end of its run.
