Solo: A Star Wars Story Stumbles In Week Two

Like last weekend, the good news for Solo: A Star Wars Story is that it topped the box office but it’s another case of good news/bad news. The bad news last weekend was that it underperformed & the bad news this weekend is that it fell hard in its sophomore outing which doesn’t bode well for its long-term prospects.

Solo grossed an estimated $29.2 million this weekend which is a drop of 65.3%. The film has grossed $148.8 million to date on a reported $300 million budget. The film is not going to match its budget stateside & with a worldwide gross of $264.2 million, it’s barely going to cover itself internationally.

Deadpool 2 holds steady at number 2 with $23.3 million. The sequel has been a solid performer & has grossed $254.6 million to date. Overseas the film is also doing well as it brings its worldwide total to just shy of $600 million.

Debuting to expectations in third is Adrift with $11.5 million. The film received a “B” CinemaScore which is ok but I think the $35 million film may struggle to match its budget domestically.

Dropping to fourth is Avengers: Infinity War with $10.3 million. The film has grossed $642.8 million to date & it’s only $35 million shy of hitting $2 billion worldwide. Don’t worry folks, it’s going to happen.

Rounding out the top five is Book Club with $6.8 million. The film is still a solid counterprogramming option as it brings its domestic total to $47 million on a reported $10 million budget.
