It’s been over a year since cinephiles have experienced another installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As COVID-19 led to theaters shutting their doors, Black Widow moved from their original May release to November. As theaters prepare to reopen at the end of the month, news about one of the most anticipated films of the year has been revealed.
Speaking to Empire magazine for the upcoming Big-Screen Preview issue, director Cate Shortland spoke about that interesting dichotomy, hinting that while Black Widow is the last hurrah for Johansson, things are only just beginning for Florence Pugh’s incoming Yelena. Shortland stated,
“[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,”
“And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”
By the sounds of the quote, it looks as though Black Widow will add a new member to the Marvel team and one that is welcomed as Pugh is one of the best young actresses in Hollywood.
