Ryan Reynolds is making some big moves! Fox has made a three-year first look deal with Reynolds’ Maximum Effort and their first outing will be a live-action film based on the Hasbro board game Clue.
The film will reteam Reynolds with Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, writers of the first Deadpool film. The movie will be developed as a star vehicle for Reynolds, based on the mythology of the popular board game.
It makes sense for Fox to stay in business with Reynolds. Deadpool defied expectations and went on to gross $783 million worldwide. Not only did it become the highest global grossing R-rated film of all time but it also became Fox’s biggest worldwide hit since the release of Avatar.
This is also a big move for Reynolds because it keeps him in the Fox fold well into their merger with Disney. That merger is expected to take about a year to wrap up and by that time I’m sure there will be some serious talks about integrating him and Deadpool into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe that Disney has already established.
As for Clue, the board game was previously adapted into a film back in 1985. The movie starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lloyd and while not a huge hit, the film did gain a bit of cult status after its release. Universal tried to develop another version in 2008 with Gore Verbinski but they could never figure out the best way to bring it to the big screen, Eventually, the rights lapsed and landed at Fox in 2016.
