Release Date Shuffle Pushes A Quiet Place Part II & Top Gun: Maverick Into 2021, Spider-Man 3 Moves To December 2021

Are any movies coming out in 2020? Paramount Pictures announced yesterday evening that they are opting to move A Quiet Place Part II & Top Gun: Maverick off their schedule for the year & into 2021. A Quiet Place Part II is now set to bow April 23, 2021, while Top Gun: Maverick has been pushed to next summer on July 2, 2021.

A Quiet Place Part II was a week away from opening back in March when Paramount decided to delay the film in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The release date was then moved to September and that date seemed like a safe bet but as the coronavirus continues to surge in certain states and movie theaters remain shuttered in key markets like Los Angeles and New York City, the September date also became less of a plausibility for the film. Paramount didn’t give a reason as to why they pushed the film into 2021 but it should play pretty well that weekend in April.

Top: Gun Maverick was originally set to bow in June but the film was shifted to December in response to theater closures and the coronavirus. I actually thought Top Gun: Maverick would play very well in December but maybe they felt the Fourth of July holiday of 2021 was a better fit for the highly anticipated sequel. The removal of both of these films from the 2020 calendar just makes the slate even more bare this year and puts into question whether or not we will have much of a release slate left this year.

Also on the move, but still releasing in 2021, is the third MCU Spider-Man film which originally was set to launch November 5, 2021. Spider-Man will now swing into theaters on December 17, 2021. The film takes Avatar 2’s old slot which shifted to December 16, 2022 yesterday. The only upside to this Spider-Man news is that December 17 is my birthday. Count my blessings I suppose?
