Reel Box Office Update: New Estimates Have Star Wars Below $100 million in Weekend Two As Jumanji Surges Higher & All The Money In The World Debuts

We have some updated box office info. These numbers change quite a bit, especially with analyst not truly knowing how much of a detriment it was that Christmas Eve fell on a Sunday this year, which made for a lower box office Sunday than usual.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was originally estimated to be at $103.1 million by end of Christmas Day but it looks to be lower at $99 million. Once actuals are released later today it could be an even $100 million but as of now, the film grossed just $2.9 million more than Rogue One did a year ago during this time frame.

The box office updates continue to benefit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle which was estimated to have grossed $70.4 million by end of Christmas Day but now the number is closer to $72 million since it launched on Wednesday. Star Wars was going to be the default winner of the holiday season but Jumanji is proving to be a solid runner-up.

Also performing slightly better than originally estimated is Pitch Perfect 3. Some have it at $25-26 million over 4 days but it looks to be coming in with $26.4 million. Not a huge difference but another example of being a film that was tough to call with its Christmas Eve Sunday estimates.

The Greatest Showman, Downsizing & Father Figures are pretty much in line with their early estimates but we will report if their numbers changed when the actuals are released.

Also opening Christmas Day was All The Money In The World which came in way below my prediction with $2.6 million. Perhaps the subject matter doesn’t scream Christmas Day viewing but neither did Fences and that opened to $6.7 million last year. Both films skew older so I figured it was a safe comparison. All The Money In The World is fresh at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and it has some significant Golden Globe nominations so we will have to see how this one legs out.

Also showing some impressive grosses in 271 locations was Molly’s Game which grossed $1.04 million on Christmas Day. The film opens wider January 5th but this is a strong start for the critically acclaimed Aaron Sorkin film.

Check back later today once the final weekend box office numbers are released!
